Fab Academy: sign in now!

Monday, August 31st, 2009

In September the Fab Academy will start at the Fablab Amsterdam. Anyone wishing to participate in the Fab Academy can now subscribe for the courses.

The Fab Academy offers Certificates on relevant technical topics, and a Diploma aimed at vocational and technical training for employment and investment (along with assistance to its graduates in those areas). These are accredited by the Fab Academy; it is anticipated that they will by followed by a Bachelor’s degree to be offered under applicable regional accreditation, along with post-graduate study.

Fab Academy Certificates provide familiarity with technical options and capabilities, hands-on experience, and direction for further study. Each requires, and is evaluated by, developing and documenting projects. They are periodically renewed to reflect best practices. The Certificates typically
require 1-2 weeks. They are combined in the Diploma, which requires about 1 year, with progress evaluated by skills and projects rather than time or credits.

The Fab Academy faculty is coordinated by CBA’s Director Prof. Neil Gershenfeld. Academic Coordination and Management is taken by Fab Lab Barcelona at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia. Hands-on class work is guided by instructors in the labs with the skills to supervise and evaluate Certificates.

Fablab Amsterdam offers special prizes for participation in the Academy for the season 2009-2010. More information can be found at the project site or with the Fablab manager Alex Schaub.

We challenge you to come up with fresh business ideas and innovations that have the potential for real-world success. You are about to become part of a powerful network of co‐innovators and aspiring entrepreneurs, leading companies, organizations, and venture capitalists.

The competition will take place in three rounds. You can submit ideas in one or more of four thematic streams: consumer lifestyle, media & communication, healthcare, and cleantech & energy. Throughout the competition we will provide coaching and advice, to help you become successful.

There are numerous prizes to be won in each of the three rounds of the Amsterdam Challenge. Moreover, teams that make it to the final round will be offered the unique opportunity to convert their ideas in real‐life businesses, in close collaboration with some of our partners.

The serious game of Mijn naam is Haas is expanding at the moment. This fall a picture book and CD-ROM of Haas will be available in stores. And after winning a huge amount of money with M&ICT the start-ups can scale up their concept.

By winning the M&ICT contest Mijn naam is Haas can make their game more suitable to the subject materials of primary school. Next to that the Guild Members are working on an edition of the online game to play at home, which is more effective for wiping out language arrears. With a picture book and CD-ROM, published with Bruna, on top of that there’s no way to not know about the Mijn naam is Haas empire. No wonder they’ve appeared at the national news programma RTL Nieuws. This week they’re also editor-in-chief at idealize.nl. Lot’s of exposure, obviously!
