Europe is leading in broadband penetration

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

The Next Web blog points out an interesting fact for start-ups: Europe is a Broadband Paradise!

According to a study conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) twelve of the fifteen countries with the highest broadband penetration per 100 inhabitants are European. This includes countries with a very low population density such as Norway and Sweden, so there are no excuses for the United States for finishing in 15th place (23.3%).

The Netherlands is doing very well, finishing in second place (34.8%), just after Denmark (35.1%). Good news for all those internet start-ups with business models relying on (3D) visualization, video or gaming. Or an opportunity focus on serving the people with slower connections instead. They still form the majority and, despite being less cool, might offer interesting opportunities. Click here for a spreadsheet with the complete research results.
