EFFECT Photonics wins first Amsterdam-Antwerp Challenge Award

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Thursday 25th of March Philips, Mediaguild and High Tech Campus Eindhoven awarded EFFECT Photonics for their business plan.

The Amsterdam Antwerp Challenge is a local business plan competition for international talent modeled on the business plan competitions of M.I.T. and Cambridge University. Main goals of the competition concern bringing together technical and business talent, currently fragmented across the Amsterdam-Antwerp corridor, and to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in this region.

About EFFECT Photonics
The demand for communication bandwidth is higher than ever and becomes increasingly complex. Management and energy consumption are becoming bottlenecks for future growth. Effect Photonics, a spin off from the internationally renowned Cobra Research Institute, develops high end Photonic Integrated Circuits (PiC’s). These PiC’s solve the management and energy issues related to the growth in communication bandwidth. The first product that will enter the market is a patented tunable laser that is 100 times faster than currently available, far less complex and with more flexibility. First samples are shipped to interested customers in the first quarter of 2011. Volume production is expected in 2012.

The largest target for this product is the domestic fiber market. An estimated 300.000 devices per year will be needed in 2015 to answer the demand for bandwidth. As the high specifications for this market are developed, sub markets can be targeted with intermediate devices. Founded by Boudewijn Docter (PhD Cobra), Effect Photonics is now actively scouting for expansion of the team with an experienced CEO in the electronics or telecom business. Roughly € 1.3m of investment capital is needed to start up this company which could be paid back approximately within four to five years.

EFFECT Photonics won € 5000,- and coaching to start-up their business.
Philips, Mediaguild and High Tech Campus Eindhoven will organise the second AA-Challenge in the autumn of 2010.

Incubator Exchange at World Tennis Tournament

Monday, February 8th, 2010

incubatorexchange

After making guest appearances at Emerce eDay and Picnic, tomorrow the 4th edition of the Incubator Exchange will take place at the World Tennis Tournament. Mediaguild, ABN AMRO Dialogues Incubator and Emerce founded the Incubator Exchange.

The 37th edition of the World Tennis Tournament, which takes place at Ahoy in Rotterdam from February 8-14, will sport the likes of Rafael Nadal, Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic on its center court; an ideal occasion to bring Holland’s top innovators together as well. Attendees are thereafter invited as a VIP guest of ABN AMRO/Incubator Exchange, for the tennis tournament.

The Incubator Exchange was founded in 2008. Reason behind this was the lack of professionals being able to meet other like minded people from various backgrounds. As Auke and Jaspar had found out, it is highly enjoyable being in the practice of really open innovation. One of their results is the soon to be launched artstart, an online art trading venture.
As of 2009, Gijs Vroom from Emerce joined the ranks to accelerate the platform. Auke is Incubator Manager at Mediaguild Jaspar is Business Development Manager at the Dialogues Incubator and Gijs is Publisher at Emerce.

Fab Academy: sign in now!

Monday, August 31st, 2009

In September the Fab Academy will start at the Fablab Amsterdam. Anyone wishing to participate in the Fab Academy can now subscribe for the courses.

The Fab Academy offers Certificates on relevant technical topics, and a Diploma aimed at vocational and technical training for employment and investment (along with assistance to its graduates in those areas). These are accredited by the Fab Academy; it is anticipated that they will by followed by a Bachelor’s degree to be offered under applicable regional accreditation, along with post-graduate study.

Fab Academy Certificates provide familiarity with technical options and capabilities, hands-on experience, and direction for further study. Each requires, and is evaluated by, developing and documenting projects. They are periodically renewed to reflect best practices. The Certificates typically
require 1-2 weeks. They are combined in the Diploma, which requires about 1 year, with progress evaluated by skills and projects rather than time or credits.

The Fab Academy faculty is coordinated by CBA’s Director Prof. Neil Gershenfeld. Academic Coordination and Management is taken by Fab Lab Barcelona at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia. Hands-on class work is guided by instructors in the labs with the skills to supervise and evaluate Certificates.

Fablab Amsterdam offers special prizes for participation in the Academy for the season 2009-2010. More information can be found at the project site or with the Fablab manager Alex Schaub.
